Dance mom, boy mom, NoFo mom. When local momma, Meagan Grattan, isn’t teaching dance lessons at her Southold studio, Inspire Dance Centre, she’s keeping busy with her young sons Luke (4) and Jase (2).

Join us as Meagan shares mothering on the North Fork in our monthly Mom Club, a Q&A with local North Fork moms.

We hope this series inspires you and helps to make motherhood less intimidating, more inclusive, and more connected.

Q: Describe your parenting style in three words.

Meagan: Nurturing, affectionate, supportive.

Q: What is your favorite thing about motherhood?

Meagan: Watching my boys grow and explore life. They help me live in the moment.

Q: What is your least favorite thing about motherhood?

Meagan: Watching them grow too fast.

Q: Would you change anything about motherhood?

Meagan: I wish I could have my boys’ energy half the time. Thank goodness for coffee!

Q: In your opinion, what makes raising children on the North Fork unique?

Meagan: My husband, Derek Grattan, was born and raised here on the North Fork. He was a 5th-generation graduate of Southold. I’m originally from Kingston, Massachusetts. I’d say the close-knit community and connection with our local friends is the most unique part about raising children on the North Fork. Very different than where I grew up.

Q: What role does nature play in raising your children?

Meagan: We are beach bums! You’ll be catching us at the beach almost every day this summer.

Q: What's your children's favorite thing you've recently done together on the North Fork?

Meagan: They love attending classes at The Heart of It. Whether they are watching their momma take a fitness class with Rachel Goodale or getting messy with Miss Amelia, they love it there.

Q: What is one thing every kid should experience on the North Fork?

Meagan: Going out on the water, fishing the Bay, or seeing land from a boat. Such a beautiful experience. My boys are lucky to do this often; their dad is a charter boat captain.

It’s said that motherhood lasts long after we're gone — that it's the values that live within our children for their whole lives, too. What are some things that you hope your children carry with them forever?

Meagan: Work hard, stay determined. You can do anything you set your mind to. My husband and I are both local business owners, and every day we strive to lead by example. We hope our boys see the passion, the hustle, and the heart we pour into what we do — and that it inspires them to chase their own dreams with pride and confidence.
